Benedictine Spirituality
The Retreat will run along the lines of Benedict’s principles of seeking authentic spiritual health, combining contemplative prayer and study of scripture with conversation and worship. This will be presented in the context of the Advent Season.
Order of Holy Cross
In Aotearoa-New Zealand, the Order is represented by Benedictine Oblates who are professed as Associates of Holy Cross. They live and work in the community and are members of parishes from across the country. They are bound together in prayer by their living, according to the Rule of Saint Benedict, under the auspices of the Order. The local Chapter is abbreviated as OHCNZ. This retreat will be conducted by two members of OHCNZ, both of whom are Anglican Priests.
Format of the retreat
13 December - arrive at Benedict House by 5pm.
5pm Welcome and retreat overview, followed by a meal then Night Prayer (Silence until after breakfast)
14 December - Morning Prayer at 8am followed by breakfast.
9am – 11am Benedict the man…Benedictine the Spirituality
11am-noon Individual contemplation exercise on the past year (quiet time)
Noon Eucharist
1pm Lunch
2-3pm an exercise in Lectio Divina
3-5pm Preparing an Advent Contemplation
5pm Evening Prayer
6pm Dinner
9pm Compline (Silence until after breakfast)
15 December - Morning Prayer at 8am followed by breakfast.
9am – 11am, Presentation of Advent Contemplation
11am-noon, Quiet time
Noon Eucharist
1pm Lunch
2-4pm Preparing an Advent Meal with South Indian Cuisine (led by an Indian chef)
4-5pm Quiet time
5pm Evening Prayer
6pm Dinner
9pm Compline (Silence until after breakfast)
16 December – Morning Prayer at 8am followed by breakfast.
9-10am Farewells and Departure – there are options for those wishing to stay until Sunday
